Shortly after 2:30 AM, Wednesday, CHP began receiving reports of a rollover traffic collision on Northbound 101, near Great America Parkway. Initial responding units located a Mercedes SUV with major front end damage, a Ford SUV which had rolled over, and a fuel tanker truck on the right hand shoulder. All parties were out of their vehicles. Santa Clara FD responded, treating and transporting 3 patients, and securing the vehicles. According to CHP, it appears that there were two separate collisions. The initial collision was the White Mercedes SUV which rear ended the fuel tanker truck, and then the Ford SUV rolled over attempting to avoid the initial collision. Unknown at this time if speed, alcohol, or drugs played a role in the crash. All 3 patients were transported to nearby trauma centers in stable condition. CHP San Jose is handling the investigation. The fuel tanker truck sustained rear end damage, and a blown out tire, but otherwise is structurally sound.
