ORANGE (CNS) – A three-alarm fire destroyed a restaurant today on the
border of Orange and Garden Grove but injured no one, authorities said.
The fire was reported about 1:50 a.m. at Spicy Thai at 4715 W. Chapman
Ave. and it took about 60 firefighters from multiple agencies two hours to
knock it down, said Orange City Fire Department Capt. Casey Fieldhouse.
He said firefighters initially responded to the blaze offensively but
about 15 minutes in, they took a defensive position — fighting the blaze from
the exterior — as the building became well-involved with fire and they could
not safely get inside.
About 30 minutes in to the firefight, Fieldhouse said, the restaurant’s
facade, or awning, collapsed, shearing a gas meter, which had to be shut down.
The building is a complete loss, Fieldhouse said, and the cause of the
fire is under investigation. A loss figure will be tabulated when fire
investigators speak to the owner, he said.
Chapman Avenue at Haster Street was closed for the investigation.
