DESERT HOT SPRINGS (CNS) – A wind-fanned brush fire broke out today in unincorporated Desert Hot Springs, sparking additional blazes that altogether spanned about 15 acres. Flames reported at 4:11 p.m. at several spots east of the intersection
of Palm Drive and 20th Avenue amid heavy brush, according to April Newman of the Riverside County Fire Department. The main blaze had blackened about 10 acres as of 5 p.m., Newman said, with multiple other spot fires spotted outside the fire line. Nearly four dozen firefighters were on scene, with support from the California Highway Patrol and Desert Hot Springs Police Department. The CHP reported that with flames potentially reaching 20th Avenue, police shut down the intersection at Bubbling Wells Road, east of where the fires were spotted. Authorities also shut down Palm Drive at Varner Road, south of the fires, to keep motorists from heading into the scene as firefighters worked to contain the flames.
