At approximately 2:15 AM Sunday morning, the Costa Mesa Fire Department responded to reports of vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision near the intersection of Newport Boulevard and 19th Street. Crews arriving on scene found one male patient lying in the street with no vehicle in sight. The victim was transported in unknown condition to an area hospital. Reports indicate the driver of the vehicle stopped briefly after striking the victim before fleeing the scene. Good Samaritans followed the driver who was subsequently stopped by police in the area of Dyer and the SR-55 Freeway. The driver was arrested on suspicion of hit and run and possibly driving under the influence. The Costa Mesa Police Department is handling the investigation.
